A Long Weekend on Tybee Island & Savannah

Savannah had been on my list for quite some time and it did not disappoint! I can't imagine someone not having a good time in this city. There is so much to eat, see and drink (Savannah's open carry law was quite the hit on our trip)! When we visited in the summer, we stayed on the charming Tybee Island, which is only 30 minutes outside the city. For those who haven't visited the Deep South, Savannah is a good place to start. It's just as charming but cheaper than its larger sister city, Charleston, which sits 100 miles north.

THURSDAY

  • There are several places to eat on Tybee Island. Obviously, seafood is the go-to cuisine. However, us being Texans, we immediately snuffed out the closest taco spot to our cottage and we were not disappointed! Chamacos Tacos & Surf has delicious tacos and carafes of margaritas.

  • Right across the street is Sting Ray's, which has really good seafood and a fun vibe. They also had my favorite cocktail-in-a-can, New York Fisher's Island Lemonade, which they don't have in Texas! Tip: Put your name on the list and then go to Chamacos for margaritas!

  • Along Butler Avenue, there are several dive-y bars. If you're looking for karaoke or live music to end the night, you've got plenty of options.

FRIDAY

  • Kick off your day at the no-frills Breakfast Club!

  • After filling up on eggs and bacon and waffles, it's beach time! There are a lot of spots on Tybee but we set up near the pier. If you don't have beach chairs, there are several shops along the main drag to pick up anything you need.

  • We went to Chamacos for lunch, because we couldn't stay away from their Ranch Waters and fish tacos.

  • Plan for dinner at AJ's during sunset and you won't be disappointed! The dockside restaurant has yummy drinks and seafood entrees.

SATURDAY

  • Savannah is on the agenda for today! First stop is breakfast at the Little Duck Diner, an adorable spot that serves tasty egg and sausage croissants and puts rubber duckies in your mimosas.

  • It's time to check out this incredible city and its parks. Old Town Trolley Tours gives its passengers an overview of the city on an open-air trolley ride. Or you can opt for a more cost-efficient option and do a self-guided walking tour.

  • For lunch, stop at Treylor Park for some nachos. If you have more time, people line up every day at lunch to experience the delicious southern home cooking in Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room.

  • Don't forget to enjoy a drink while wandering around! The Collins Quarter in Forsyth Park has a fun cocktail menu. If ice cream is more your speed, Leopold's is hard to beat.

  • The Mercer House is another can't-miss spot. True crime fans likely already know the story of the murder that took place in the house. To get up to speed, read (or watch) Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil before visiting. The stunning house sits on Monterey Square and offers tours.

  • Looking for a unique gift? You can't miss The Paris Market, E Shaver Bookstore, and One Fish Two Fish. Savannah also has a LAKE store for those obsessed with their pajamas.

  • For dinner, The Olde Pink House is a staple in Savannah! It was closed for a wedding when we were there, but we snapped a photo of the elegant building, which was built in 1771. Another option is Husk, which has incredible dishes and strong cocktails. Reservations are highly recommended for both restaurants.

  • For after-dinner drinks, the Bohemian Hotel Rooftop is on the river and pretty swanky. If you're a fan of dive bars, Abe's on Lincoln is right around the corner from The Olde Pink House.

  • We did not get a chance to join a ghost tour of the city, but many of my friends say it's a can't-miss.

SUNDAY

  • Another spot made famous from the Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil book was Clary's Café, an authentic hole-in-the-wall diner. Stop here for breakfast before heading out.

  • If you aren't leaving until later in the day, my Savannah native friend highly recommends Collins Quarter or The Grey for brunch!

ADDITIONAL RELEVANT TIPS

  • It's not necessary to rent a car, especially if you're only staying in Savannah. The city is very walkable. A group of my friends rented mopeds when they visited and had the best time, so it's up to you!

  • This city is humid, on a level I have never experienced, when we visited in June. Consider this when booking your trip.

  • We stayed at a Mermaid Cottage called "A Little Salty" and I can't recommend their customer service enough! They were quick to reply and our house was the perfect beach escape.
