A Weekend in Charleston

Updated: Mar 1, 2023

If you're wondering why you should visit Charleston, there's just one thing to know: the trees. The views of the water, the historic church architecture, fabulous shopping and mouthwatering restaurants are also hard to beat... I think I ate shrimp and grits almost every meal. You will never regret a trip to the Holy City, especially if you can squeeze in a trip to the beach while you're there!

FRIDAY

  • Carriage tour of Charleston - My friends from Charleston recommended the Palmetto Carriage Works and it did not disappoint! It's a great way to see the city.

  • Charleston City Market - Considered the cultural heart of Charleston, check out all the different stands with food, handcrafted art and more!

  • Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park - Walk along the water and enjoy the colorful and historical homes, or sit a spell on the porch swings along the dock.

  • The Vendue - The rooftop bar has a pretty good happy hour and some incredible views of the Holy City at sunset.

  • The Watch Rooftop - Make a reservation for this hot spot that has great drinks and a delicious menu.

  • Blind Tiger Pub - This spot seems to attract wedding parties and is great for people watching.

  • Interested in live music? Check out Music Farm or Prohibition.

SATURDAY

  • Callie's Hot Little Box Biscuit - Order the "Choose Three Biscuits" so you can try different kinds!

  • Rent bikes and hit the town! Except don't ride on sidewalks, we found that out the hard way.

  • College of Charleston - We were there during spring break, so we didn't see many college students, but the campus is gorgeous to ride your bike through.

  • The Battery - We learned a lot about the history of Charleston as we walked along the battery and took in the massive trees and views of the water.

  • 167 RAW - We tried our first raw oysters here! They were not well-received. Otherwise, fantastic fish tacos!

  • Fort Sumter - Hop on the 2:30 p.m. boat and head to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861.

  • Carmella's - One of the best desserts that I've had, ever! They use a panini maker to put ice cream inside pound cake and it's wonderful.

  • King Street - Pop in a few of the boutiques, there's something for everyone! Plus, you can pick up a new beach read from Blue Bicycle Books.

  • Poogan's Porch - This Lowcounty cuisine spot has fantastic fried green tomatoes. Make a reservation.

  • Gin Joint - this upscale speakeasy has some pretty innovative drinks! If that's not your scene, hit up The Griffon, an English pub/dive bar that attracts a great crowd.

SUNDAY

  • Get donuts at Glazed after picking up the rental car for your day trip to Sullivan's Island!

  • Boone Plantation Hall - One of the spots The Notebook was filmed, and has a great tour that offers insight on plantation life. If anything, just go for the Avenue Of Oaks.

  • Poe's Tavern - A burger restaurant that pays tribute to Edgar Allen Poe! If you prefer Italian, head to Obstinate Daughter down the street.

  • Beach time - Change into your suit, grab your new book, and head to the beach! Sullivan's Island is pretty accessible, but Isle of the Palms is also a great spot with a fun beach club, The Windjammer.

  • Husk - Make. A. Reservation. ASAP. Like, right after you book your flights.

  • Drinks at B the Belmont or Bay Street Biergarten

MONDAY

  • The Rarebit is a great option for brunch, but be prepared to wait if you get there later!

  • Visit the adorable stationary shop, Mac & Murphy, before heading out of town.

ADDITIONAL RELEVANT TIPS

  • Most spots we ate required a reservation, so if you are going with a big group, be sure to make reservations before your trip.

  • Charleston is pretty walkable! There's no need to rent a car or Uber unless you want to go to the beach or the plantations.

  • It gets pretty busy on the weekends. We went in the middle of the week and it was the best decision ever.
