Poland was not a destination at the top of my list, but my slight (ahem) obsession with WWII that has developed since my move to Germany compelled me to check it out. There are a several destinations that you can choose from: Gdansk, Warsaw or Krakow. Since I only had a long weekend, I chose Krakow so I could tour Auschwitz, and I was so glad I did! Wandering around the Wawel Castle District, devouring dumplings and exploring the Jewish District kept me plenty busy. Another great thing about the city is that it's pretty cheap. The airport isn't too far from the city center and there are plenty of places to stay.
FRIDAY
First, drop your bags at your Airbnb or hotel of choice. I cannot say enough good things about the Imagine Apartments, and the location in between the Jewish District and old town is perfect.
It's time to explore! The Wawel Castle District has a lot to offer tourists. If you are interested in art, tour the castle. I opted for a guided audio tour of the Wawel Cathedral and it was unbelievable. Don't miss the views from the belltower. The castle grounds also has a Dragon's Den, a large cave that was the home of a legendary dragon. It's a huge hit with kids.
After getting your fill of the castle district, head to the city center. The Rynek Główny is the largest town square in Europe. In the middle stands the old Cloth Hall, which is now filled with stands selling all sorts of Polish trinkets.
Before dinner, head to Hotel Stary Sky Bar for a cocktail and a fantastic view of the old town from above. Just FYI, it is closed in the winter.
It's time for dinner! Polish dumplings are obviously a can't-miss during your visit, so be sure to check out Pijalnia Wódki i Piwa or Kuchnia U Babcia Maliny.
There are so many bars in Krakow's old town it will make your head spin. Most are touristy, but that doesn't mean they aren't fun! I had a great time at Single Scena Music Bar (lol at this name), they have live music most nights!
SATURDAY
Start your morning off right at the Camelot Cafe. The French Toast with cinnamon was delicious!
St. Mary's Basilica was my favorite spot in Krakow. It only costs a few dollars to see the inside and the gorgeous blue ceilings. My photos don't do it justice! On the hour every hour, a trumpeteer plays from the belltower, so be sure to stop and listen.
I know I've mentioned it in a few other blogs, but "GPS My City" app is such a great resource! Take a look at it so you don't miss any of the spots in the old town.
Now trek down to the Jewish District for lunch. I stopped at Hamsa and it was delicious. Order the Jebneh for an appetizer and the local beer. The Jewish Bookstore is next door and has many books about Krakow during WWII.
If you're interested, the Remu’h Synagogue and New Jewish Cemetery have a lot of ties to the Krakow Ghetto. Unfortunately I did not have enough time but would definitely go on my next visit.
Across the river is Schindler's enamel factory, which now houses a history museum focusing on Krakow during WWII. It covers a lot of information, so I would recommend booking a guided tour through GetYourGuide.
A short walk away is the Ghetto Heroes Square. The memorial honors the 33,000 lives lost in the Krakow Ghetto.
Take a break and enjoy the vibe at HEVRE, a former synagogue-turned-bar. Order some fries and maybe a cocktail.
For dinner, enjoy some delicious Italian food at Nolio! The pizza looked delicious but I opted for the pasta.
After dinner, enjoy a drink at the Propaganda Pub. Filled with communist era memorabilia, the pub is on the edge of the Jewish District is great for people watching. A few other fun bars in the area include Alchemia, Singer and Absynt Cafe.
SUNDAY
On my last day, I toured the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. It was a very powerful experience and I encourage everyone to tour the camp if you have the time. It is quite an extensive compound and would be best experienced on a guided tour. There are many options here, but I selected the early bird package where they pick you up at 7 a.m. and you return around 2 p.m..
After returning to Krakow, it would be best to sit and process what you have just seen. Settle in at C.K. Browar brewery for a beer flight and an order of cheese fries. Another option is PodwaFelskie Bubble Waffle. I recommend ordering the Kinder Country.
ADDITIONAL RELEVANT TIPS
I did an insane amount of walking in Krakow. If you would prefer a different method of transportation, there are numerous golf cart cart tours that you can hop on to see the city in just a few hours.
