New York City

Updated: Dec 29, 2018

By far, my favorite city to visit! It has something for everyone! If you don't like cities, no worries, this one has a giant park in the middle.

FRIDAY

  • Top of the Rock - A much better view of the skyline than the Empire State Building, just reserve your spot beforehand.

  • Aria Hell's Kitchen - Best lasagna I've ever had. Hands down. Be sure to make a reservation. Tip: If you're in more of a rush, Gotham West Market has a variety of cuisines!

  • Broadway show - You can't go wrong with Chicago, Wicked or Hamilton! If you're fine with waiting until day-of, hit up the TKTS booth (located in Times Square & Financial District) to get deeply discounted tickets. (Other sites to look at are Today Tix and StubHub)

  • Post-show drinks on the west side - Keep your eyes peeled for Chuck Bass if you stop by the Empire Hotel's rooftop bar.

SATURDAY

  • 9/11 Museum - This is the one can't-miss activity in the city. Budget about 2-3 hours for this, and save yourself some time by buying your tickets online ahead of time.

  • South Street Seaport - This is one of New York's best kept secrets. Grab a cup of coffee and walk around the cute shops, restaurants and bars. In past years, there's been fun happy hour pop-up in the summer!

  • Little Italy for lunch - Walk into any restaurant in this quaint neighborhood for some delicious Italian food!

  • Chinatown/Canal Street - Part of the New York experience is perusing the *interesting* merchandise along Canal Street and throughout the side-shops in Chinatown.

  • High-Line - The park is built on old railroad tracks and offers fantastic views of the city and Lady Liberty; it connects Chelsea, West Village & the Meatpacking District.

  • Chelsea Market - This indoor food hall has something for everyone, including a few fun shops and Instagrammable spots. If you're up for dessert, get a Fat Witch brownie!

  • Staten Island Ferry - The FREE ferry ride is a great way to see the island from the water, and if you time it right, it's offers a gorgeous sunset view of Lady Liberty.

  • Bubby's - I recommend the fried chicken or pancakes, and a slice of pie for dessert! Right around the corner is Gansevoort Market, a fun spot with rotating options in case you're in a time crunch.

  • The Top of The Standard - Gatsby would love this spot, and the skyline view from the bathroom is unreal.

  • Le Bain - Adjacent to the Standard Hotel, this spot has a hot tub in the middle of the dance floor. Need I say more?

  • The Jane - Between people dancing on every flat surface and the and disco ball, it was like I had walked into an episode of Gossip Girl. And it was awesome.

  • Bathtub Gin - You'll need a password (and a reservation) for this speakeasy.

  • Gansevoort Hotel rooftop - The best rooftop bar in the Meatpacking District, IMO.

SUNDAY

  • Jacob's Pickles - This UWS spot doesn't take reservations, so put your name on the list and wander around Central Park while you wait.

  • Central Park - So many places to see! Rent a bike and explore the 800-acre park, or pick up a book up at the Strand Central Park kiosk at 60th & 5th Ave and sit a spell.

  • Museum Mile - Running along 5th Ave on the UES, Museum of the City of New York and The Met are my favorites! If you're a Gossip Girl fan, snap a picture on The Met steps. Tip: The Met's rooftop bar overlooking Central Park is a hidden gem.

  • J.G. Melon - This LES institution serves up classic burgers & only takes cash.

  • Grand Central Station - For you history buffs, take a tour (self-guided or guided) of the station before snagging a cupcake at Magnolia Bakery, a drink at The Campbell, or a roll at the iconic Grand Central Oyster Bar.

MONDAY

  • Bryant Park - One of my favorite parks in the city! It's privately owned, so it has the nicest public bathrooms in NYC. The park is always hosting fun activities, such as knitting classes or ping pong tournaments.

  • New York Public Library - Why doesn't Fort Worth's library look like this?! They also offer tours that I've heard are fantastic.

ADDITIONAL RELEVANT TIPS

  • Check out PureWow, Guest of a Guest and Thrillist to see what's going on while you're there!

  • If you're there for more than three days, get a 7-day unlimited subway pass. Trust me. And take advantage of the the bus system.

  • DO NOT go to Times Square on Saturday night. Just don't.

  • If you're a student, bring your student ID! You can get discounts on museums & such.

  • Try to avoid staying in a hotel; look at vacation rentals on AirBnb & VRBO.

  • Don't discount the other boroughs, I love the Astoria neighborhood and parts of Williamsburg. Just make sure you budget enough time for travel.
