Oxford on Game Day

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

There is not another place on this earth like Oxford, Mississippi, on game day! From Oxford Square to the Grove to the game, the vibe is electric! As a lifetime Big 12 fan, I was pleasantly surprised by the hospitality and energy found at Ole Miss on Saturdays in the fall. Regardless of who you cheer for, it's a bucket list item for any college football fan. Hotty Toddy!

DINING

  • Bouré - A delicious New Orleans restaurant, enjoy a cocktail on their second-floor balcony while waiting for your table. You can't go wrong with a SweetWater Blue beer (brother's fav) and a shrimp po-boy.

  • The Beacon - This no-frills breakfast spot is a popular spot among locals, and never disappoints! Tip: It's closed on Sundays.

  • Ajax Diner - If you're looking for some authentic deep south soul food, Ajax is the place to go!

  • South Depot Taco Shop - As a Texan, I'm pretty particular about my tacos, but South Depot serves up some pretty good ones (I'm partial to their margaritas, too!).

SHOPPING

BARS

  • Library - Although the cover can be on the high side ($40+ on game day weekends), it's one of the best spots for live music in Oxford. And if the highly-anticipated 90s country cover band, Mustache Band, is playing, you don't want to miss it!

  • The Coop - It doesn't get cooler than The Graduate's rooftop bar, The Coop, which overlooks Oxford Square and serves fun cocktails.

  • Rafters - Also located on the Oxford Square, Rafters is the epitome of college dive bar. The drinks are cheap, which keeps the dance floor packed.

  • The Oxford Growler - This low-key spot has a wide selection of craft beer and yummy pub food.

  • Secret Grilled Cheese - This speakeasy has a password, a no phone rule and the best late night snacks. Located off Faulkner Alley, there is always a line when it opens at 10 p.m., but it's well worth the wait!

GAME DAY TIPS

  • Game days are magical in Oxford, but are also unbelievably crowded. Keep that in mind when needing to arrive places on time. Ubering or having someone drop you off are the best options.

  • Getting on campus for the game can get complicated. If you have a car, your best option is to park for free at the Jackson Avenue Center and ride the shuttle to campus.

  • If you bring a cooler to the Grove, bring something to secure it to your tent. Otherwise, high schoolers might steal it while you're in the game... I know this from personal experience.
