Until I moved to Germany, I had never heard of Trier. One of my colleagues is from there and encouraged me to check it out. Holding the title as the oldest town in Germany, Trier is home to the oldest Roman gate, the historic Porta Nigra, which is definitely worth a tour. The city also boasts beautiful palaces, breathtaking churches and delicious food. Another fun fact is that Fort Worth and Trier are sister cities, which involves various student exchange programs and initiatives. Learn more about it here. It's the perfect day drip from Luxembourg, so add it to your list!
MORNING
If you arrive in time for breakfast, Delikat has very tasty croissants and its the best way to start your day.
Now it's time for a walking tour of the city. There are many choices, but a free option is the self-guided walking tour in the GPS My City app. The self-guided tour let's you could spend as much time at each spot as you'd like. The only spot not on the tour was the amphitheater, which I regret missing.
One spot I chose not to tour was the Imperial Baths because I ran out of time. If you're interested in Roman history, it's a must-see.
AFTERNOON
For lunch, grab a burger or falafel. The best burger in town can be found at Der Daddy.
For those with a sweet tooth, the best gelato is Christis. I opted for the Salty Peanut and was not disappointed.
The Kurfürstliches Palais is a beautiful palace set in the middle of Trier. Although you can't tour the palace, their gardens offer the perfect spot to sit for a spell on a nice day.
There are two churches in town that necessitate a peek inside: the Trier Saint Peter's Cathedral and Liebfrauenkirche sit right next to each other and both feature breathtaking interiors.
Last but certainly not least, the Porta Nigra cannot be missed. The Roman city gate is one of the oldest in Europe and definitely deserves a tour.
EVENING
Grab a drink before dinner at the Hauptmarkt wine bar! Right in the middle of the city, it's great for people watching when it gets busy.
There are a handful of Italian restaurants in town but the best is Donna Mia! I'm always a fan of lasagna and theirs does not disappoint.
In need of a nightcap? Zapotex is a local pub with a fun vibe and live music.
Another good choice (for any Texpats) is the Coyote Cafe, which *actually* has a good margarita, as well as a wide cocktail menu.
